Yes, I know I am horrible for ragging on the Goodwill, an organization that helps thousands of people everyday, but they really need to get people that speak English and are halfway competent at their drop-off locations.I pulled up to the drop-off locale in Totem Lake, WA yesterday in a large van. I think the two guys working there must have taken one look at the van and written me off as having too much stuff for them to take. I carried one box of goods over and they told me I had too much to donate at the drop-off and I would have to go to Bellevue, to the main hub, to donate my stuff. They didn't even look in the van. How did they know I had too much? I explained, as best I could since one guy didn't speak English and the other was a little slow, that I had eight small boxes that were only partially full. I was told I had too much, in broken English, and to go to Bellevue.
I asked for the address and directions to the hub. The limited English fellow went to his little booth and pulled out a piece of paper that listed the address. I then asked for directions again and he pointed to the address. Again I asked and again he pointed to the address. While I was attempting to explain the difference between an address and directions, the slower man stepped up and started spouting directions. I asked if they had a pen I could use and he took the paper from me and disappeared into the booth for 10 minutes. When he reappeared, he had jotted down legible directions. I then left to go and donate my things at the hub pondering the thought that it would just be easier to go and toss the stuff at the dump.
You think a company that funds their operations and employees through the proceeds of selling donations would make getting donations easier and try to encourage people to donate. Instead they make us deal with people who can't speak and don't even want to do their job if it looks like it might be too much lifting for them. I think it is great that the Goodwill gives people of lesser educations and those with handicaps an opportunity to be employed but by all means, put the more capable workers in the positions that interact directly with other people. It's like call centers hiring people that can't speak the language of the population that will be calling. That makes no sense to me. I know it makes cents to the company, but come on management, lets see some actual customer service.

Um I think every single time I am on the phone with a call center the person speaks only a version of English, at best. Welcome to the new format.
