Supporting Evidence

A few weeks ago some friends visited Fox Sports Grill in downtown and said there were droves of football fans there sporting their team colors and logos.

I spoke with another acquaintance this past weekend, who said he ventures downtown from his Capitol Hill apartment to watch football there.

The bar/restaurant might carry the name and logo, but its not affiliated with Fox Broadcasting. Guess how I know? There's not enough advertisements for themselves on the walls.

But the other way I know is that there are about 25 TV sets throughout the bar/restaurant and if Fox had anything to do with this place, (had built it, designed it) the TV's would be huge. There would be three or four big screens, more sensible seating arrangements and perhaps something that hinted at all, that it was a sports bar.

The online menu's is even more distressing. Across the home page it is splashed with "Bolder Selections" "Better Pricing" and "Bigger Menu." Wouldn't this suggest they are trying to revamp their image? Not encouraging.

Happy hour lasts from 4-6, right? Wrong. Arriving at 5:35 we put in an our order for one drink each and an order of artichoke dip at 5:50. The rather large plate of food arrived a few minutes later, by a different server who explained nothing. Minutes later, when the dish was half eaten, our "main" server tells us that our food didn't make the happy hour cut, but our drinks did. We ordered them at the exact same moment.

The dip was runny and thin but I still wasn't phased by all this. What bothered me was that there were nothing but fairweather fans there watching the football game and the tv's were not as plentiful as I expected and far far too small to count as a sports bar. Now tonight's competition will come from the NBA who's banner night in Boston will be a big deal to some and Kobe on this coast. With the focus on fancy dining and not on sports, it seems like a weird way to categorize the bar. I suppose it passes for a Seattle sports bar. But I'm going to keep looking.

I'm not a fan of this place either. Sports bars should be gritty and full of true sports fans - I think Fox Sports Grill gets more of an upscale, semi-sports fan. I suppose having "Grill" rather than "Bar" at the end of their name should have tipped us off.
