Supporting Evidence
In Sept. of 08 I decided to try Magic Jack for the one month free trial. The company states that you have 30 days in which to try their product without charge. I received the Magic Jack within a week.My husband & I were not able to get it to work. When trying to activate it we kept getting the message "Your Magic Jack is Blocked." We contacted their on-line chat tech support team. We spent about 4 hours working with various members of their team to no avail. Each time we'd be given to another tech expert they'd have us go through all of the previous steps again. We were turning off fire walls and other programs, rebooting, unplugging and replugging, and on and on. Nothing worked. I really don't have anything negative to say about the "chat tech team." They tried their best and were patient & friendly. We have Comcast for our internet provider and are running Windows XP. I'm pretty sure that Comcast was doing the blocking on their end.
I must note that the Magic Jack device is balky and won't fit into the already crowed port area, so the company does send along an extension adapter.
After trying off and on for 2 days we sent the device back. I will keep a watch on my next credit card bill to make sure that Magic Jack doesn't bill us.
Has anyone else tried this device with Comcast?
Also, when I ordered the Magic Jack I wasn't aware that our computer must be on at all times for this system to work. That in itself was a deal breaker.
I then checked out Vonage, & Voip.com as these did not need to have the computer on. I googled Vonage/Viop user problems. Yikes! The amount of problems that individuals encountered with rude, hard to reach customer service with long hold times.... product failures, poor quality, and billing fiascoes makes me think that I really should just hang on to my regular land line service, as expensive as it is.
Comcast does have a sweet deal for the first year. Then after that period ends the cost jumps by about $50.00.
I would appreciate any feed back from individuals who have tried any of these services, bad or good. Especially if you have Comcast as your provider.
Thank you.

I used voip for a while, not with comcast though, and was very unsatisfied. The connection always had a lot of static and the voices seemed to quiet to hear even at the loudest volume setting.
